Free Online Halftone Image Generator

Convert any photo into an authentic printed halftone — the dot-matrix pattern used in newspapers, comics and pop art. Choose black and white, CMYK colour separation, Ben-Day comic dots or coarse pop-art dots. Sign up free and create your first halftone image in under a minute.

What the Halftone generator actually changes

  • Dot Structure: Render the whole image as a regular grid of halftone dots whose size varies with tonal density — large dots in shadows, tiny dots in highlights
  • Screen Angle: Use a correct print screen angle (45° for single-colour work; 15°/75°/0°/45° for the CMYK channels) so the rosette pattern reads as genuine offset printing
  • Colour Mode: Follow the chosen style — pure black on white, CMYK four-colour separation with visible misregistration, or a two-colour duotone
  • Paper: Simulate the paper it would be printed on — slight off-white tone, faint fibre texture, and a little ink spread at the dot edges
  • Registration: For colour styles, offset one channel by a hair so the colours are very slightly out of register, the way cheap printing looks
  • Legibility: Keep the subject clearly readable — dot size must be coarse enough to see but fine enough that the face still resolves

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a halftone image?

A halftone reproduces a continuous-tone photo using only dots of a single ink. Dot size varies with brightness — big dots make dark areas, small dots make light areas — so from a distance your eye blends them into smooth tone. It is how every newspaper photo and comic book was printed before digital.

What is the difference between halftone and Ben-Day dots?

A halftone varies dot size to build tone. Ben-Day dots, used in classic comics, are uniform dots in fixed patterns and spacings applied as flat colour areas. Pick "Comic book Ben-Day" for the comic look and "Classic black & white" for a true photographic halftone.

Is the Halftone Image Generator free to use?

Creating an account is free, and you can browse the tool without charge. Generating an image uses AI image credits from a one-time credit pack — there is no subscription and credits never expire.

Do I need to sign in to use this?

Yes, you need a free ImageRoute account to generate images. This lets us queue your request and save your result to your gallery.

How long does it take?

Most halftone generations finish in about 15–40 seconds, depending on server load.

What kind of photo works best?

A clear, well-lit photo where the subject is plainly visible gives the best results. Avoid heavily filtered, very dark or very low-resolution images.

Can I choose a specific style?

Yes — pick one of the 8 presets, or type your own instruction in the style box. Leave it blank and the AI applies classic black and white halftone.

Which AI model powers this tool?

This tool runs on Grok Imagine, which handles photo-to-photo transformation while preserving the subject's likeness.
